Freezeout tournaments
A freezeout is a tournament where each player buys in once. When you lose all your chips, you are eliminated, with no re-entries, rebuys or add-ons.
How it works
Everyone starts with the same stack. Blinds rise on a fixed schedule, and the prize pool is simply the number of entrants times the prize-pool part of the buy-in. Because nobody can buy back in, the field only shrinks.
A $10 + $1 freezeout draws 200 players. The prize pool is 200 × $10 = $2,000 (the $1 is the site fee). If it guarantees $1,500, the guarantee is already covered, so there is no overlay.
Strategy tips
- Since you have one life, avoid high-variance spots early when you only have a thin edge.
- Fields are often softer than re-entry events because recreational players can't fire repeatedly.
- Pay attention to stack depth in big blinds rather than raw chip counts.
- Steal blinds more as antes kick in. The pot is worth more relative to the risk.
- Near the money bubble, short stacks tighten up. Medium and big stacks can apply pressure.
- Budget for the buy-in: one bullet per tournament makes bankroll planning simple.
Common mistakes
- Playing too passively early and blinding down
- Calling all-ins on the bubble with marginal hands when folding keeps you alive
- Ignoring the payout structure in the late stages
🔎 Know who you're up against
With only one bullet each, the field never refills, so knowing early who the strong regulars are lets you avoid marginal fights with them and pick on the recreational players instead. Tracking your own freezeout ROI over time also shows whether these events suit your game.

Not legal advice. Online poker and sweepstakes laws vary by state, so check your local laws before you play. Only PokerStars (US) and WSOP Online are licensed in the US, and only in the states they list (NJ/PA/MI and NV/NJ/MI/PA). Offshore and crypto sites (Ignition, ACR, BetOnline, CoinPoker, Phenom) are not licensed in the US. GGPoker doesn't accept US players. CoinPoker accepts US players even though its terms list the US as restricted. Sweepstakes sites exclude some states.
Schedules come from each site's public pages, and each listing shows its source and the date we last checked it. Items marked unverified conflict across sources or are out of date. Always confirm in the poker lobby. SC (Sweeps Coins) and CHIP are treated as about $1 for stake tiers.
